MOVIE SYNOPSIS:
“I was a convict. So What?
All I need is One More Chance!”
Cai, Lin and Chua are the three main leads in the movie. They come from different educational and social backgrounds; they uphold different life perceptions and they were locked up for a different reason. Despite their extreme differences, they nurtured an extraordinary bonding between them through their time in prison.
Unfortunately, upon their release from prison, the trio encountered severe family pressure and social discrimination. In the end, fate brought them back together again…
Yi Liu Ba (starred by Lin Jun Hong) is a short, cunning man whom would never fail to scheme against Oswald. He was put behind the bars for six years for involving in commercial fraud. He was arrested on day of his wedding. By the time he was sentenced to jail, his wife was already pregnant with another's child.
Yi’s daughter, Suhui, has never addressed him as “daddy”. While this fact depressed Yi, it became his sole motivating force during his lock-up days… Forlornly, just before his struggling days were over, Huang learned of his wife, Yu Xin’s new marriage prospect, Yi Yang, a St John paramedic.
Yi was totally traumatised by the news and became dejected about his life. Fortunately, his inmates and the prison counsellor had encouraged him and help him overcome his depression.
Consequently, Yi repented and promised Suhui that he would never lie again. Hence, the most critical task that strapped on Yi’s shoulders upon his release was not just about how to return to the society or how to become a tall person but was how to savage his marriage and win over his wife and daughter.
Following his promise, Yi bravely endured all adversities in his new height search. Despite the discrimination that he received from his employers who learned of his ex-conviction, Yi stood firm to start anew and declined to be in ally with his accomplice in fraud.
Eventually, he was coerced to work in Yi Yang’s hospital where he tried to complicate things between Yu Xin and Yi Yang, triggering off a series of hilarious events. Consequently, his determination and perseverance to turn over a new leaf managed to move his wife and daughter.
And conversely, Yi Yang gave his blessing to the reconciliation of the family.
Xiong Tian Ping (starred by Cai Li), a lone druid in his mid-thirties with a dark secret of being a habitual offender of toilet break-ins, has been a regular of the prison. Xiong’s senile mum was constantly worried about Xiong’s well-being. Touched by his mum’s love and concern, Xiong vowed to turn for the good.
Although Xiong managed to secure a job after his release from the prison, he was incessantly looked down upon by his fellow colleagues. In addition to the unrequited love of his warden officer, Yeung Fan, Xiong’s confidence level really took a beating.
When Xiong’s elderly mum’s condition exacerbated, Xiong was determined to fulfil her dream of living in a bungalow. Hence, he gathered Yi and Chou who were equally despaired, to plan for a heist in Yi Yang’s house.
Chou Ren (Starred by Chua Wei Ting), a street-wise, ugly rogue, with little education has been implicated with countless illegal businesses. He was arrested for setting up an illegal gambling den in his home where he was cohabiting with Ah Shan.
Upon his release from the prison, Chou was planning to quit his gambling addiction and lead a more meaningful life with Shan. However, the incorrigible pair was unable to resist the evil temptation of their obsessive gambling habits and started to immerse in heavy betting again which drove them to choke up enormous debts with the loansharks.
Unable to cope with the huge debt repayment, Chou turned to his friends for help. Yi who was with financial difficulties of his own furiously reprimanded Chou of his incorrigibility. In spite of this, Yi persuaded Chou and Xiong to join him in setting up a home movers venture.
Though, they strived hard for the business, the company remained unprofitable as they repeatedly incurred damages to their customers’ furniture during their deliveries. As a result, they were forced to fold up the firm.
Through SCORE, Chou was given recommendation to work in a garage as a car mechanic. Being ugly by nature, Chou was unable to adapt to the stares from the people working in the garage. Even though, he and Shan continued to encourage each other to quit gambling, they took no rehabilitative actions. In due course, they were still unable to endure the bait of gambling and led themselves to end up in a hefty debt again. This time round, the loansharks became violent and even threatened to force Shan into prostitution should Chou fail to repay his loan.
When the loansharks wrecked the garage, Chou’s boss gave him a good dressing-down for dragging the company into such implication. In a fit of anger with no trace of remorsefulness, Chou threw in his resignation letter at that instant.
In desperation to pay his debts, Chou took the risk to break into Yi Yang’s house. In a swirl of chaos, he injured a constable and was put behind bars once again…
The story expressed the prejudice and difficulties that the trio faced when they tried to return to society.
With tremendous fear and pressure of losing their loved one, they persevered to change for the better. They wanted a brand new beginning and they worked hard for it. They did not give in to the discriminations that they received from the society. Instead, they endured that painfully. They fought to overcome each new challenge no matter how big the problem is or how strong the pressure is. They are no longer ashamed or afraid.
Now, they would boldly announce, “I was a convict, so what?” This is because what they need most now is for us to give them “One More Chance”!
